The cherry on top is their cashback match once you have the card for a year. The Discover it Secured is the only card worth using since it's the only one of its kind to offer any rewards. I applied for both Discover and Capital One on the same day and got approved. ![]() ![]() Everything expect for the getting denied part because I was employed. I was tempted to do like $1500-$2000 but I wanted to make sure I still have more than enough emergency fund if I need it, and the good thing about discover is I can always incrementally increase the deposit, and unlike capital one, they will actually refund me eventually!! Just plunked down $800 of my $4000 savings to get me started. I can’t wait to use this for all my monthly expenses and get 1% cash back!! I will always love capital one for giving me my first card again after getting a stable job, but the fact that they won’t let me increase my initial secured balance and that they don’t do cash back means that card is going right in the drawer and will probably just schedule my prime membership or streaming service on there with an auto-pay and reminder just to make sure it went through (I’ve come too far to let a silly computer problem cause my credit to dip again).until I want to cancel it when I’m in unsecured territory. When applying for it again 7 months ago, within the 6 month time period gave me an auto-denial I guess. I now realize it was likely because I had originally tried for the secured card when I was still technically unemployed, and that’s what I put on my application since I did not want to lie. I got denied shortly after starting my new job (being without stable employment for more than 2 years). I know this is probably not considered success for most people, but for me it’s a huge win.
